MOUNTAIN INFANTRY:
Ascend to Victory
3d Battalion 172d Infantry Regiment
(Mountain) is the U.S. Army's only active alpine unit. New soldiers attend
their initial active duty training at the U.S. Army Infantry School in Fort
Benning, Georgia to start, but the best is yet to come. Mountain Infantry
soldiers continue their training at the Mountain Warfare School at Camp Ethan
Allen, Vermont. This school is run by us, for the Army, and is the only Military
Mountaineering School accredited by TRADOC (Army Training) to give the graduates the "E" qualifier
(meaning the Military Mountaineer.) There are two, two-week phases to this school: summer and winter. At the Mountain Warfare School, soldiers learn rock and ice climbing,
skiing, snow shoeing, cold weather survival techniques, rappelling, land
navigation, and more. After completion of this course, you have earned the
mountain skill identifier.
In Bivouac
As a Mountain Infantryman, you will be equipped
with much more than the M16A2 rifle, M24 sniper rifle, 7.62 millimeter machine
gun, or 60 millimeter mortar. You will be trained to operate the latest in night
vision, skiing, and mountaineering equipment. As a Mountain Infantryman, we pay
you to learn survival skills, climb mountains under all climatic conditions, and
skill! There is also more to this than just being a mountaineer, and more opportunities than Infantry. There are also Medics, Combat Engineers, Mortarmen, Snipers, Cooks, Commo and others.
